I adore slow weekends at home, but once the holiday season kicks off, our calendar begins to fill up! This past weekend prior to Halloween and Día de Los Muertos, the festivities began right after school on Friday, and continued until late Sunday. Our whole family has been waiting for the day that Pixar’s Coco landed in theaters. Coco debuted in Mexico a month prior than the US, one of the benefits of living 10 minutes away from the US/MEX border. It was Camila’s first time going to the movies, and I could tell that she thoroughly enjoyed it. We all did! Giovanni walked away feeling the most inspired. So much he decided to have a last minute change of Halloween costume to be Miguel, the main character of the film.

We love to bring the littles to Mercado Hidalgo year round, but during the holiday season is truly something special

We crossed into Tijuana ahead of the scheduled movie showing to stop at Tijuana's Mercado Hidalgo. Knowing that we were going to watch Coco, we stuck to our yearly tradition for Día de Los Muertos, and perhaps was a little extra special this time around. We love to bring the littles to Mercado Hidalgo year round, but during the holiday season it's truly something special. We visit the altar set up for Día de los Muertos every year, and let the kids choose their own mini sugar skull to bring home with them. Walking through the aisles lined with flores cempasúchil, vibrant colors boasting from all the seasonal fruits and vegetables, rows of sugar skulls and other adornments used for altar decorations it's so beautiful and inspiring. In our own home, we know that it's the season's kick off when the gorgeous pan de muerto hits the dining table. I’m hoping that they remember and carry on these memories with them forever. Below are some scenes from our visit to Tijuana's Mercado Hidalgo during Día de los Muertos season.
